The Kapu Kai

This documentary project has been something I've been working on for the last four or five years. Granted, there was a portion of that time where the project sat idle, but finishing it up was always on my mind. The story of the Kapu Kai begins back in the 60s and winds its way into the present day. My father, with his partners, owned and operated the bowling alley and restaurant in Cucamonga California. It was destroyed by a flash flood in 1969 and the resulting financial ruin brought my family back to Hawaii.

Bytemarks Lunch at the Pacific Aviation Museum

Our January Bytemarks Lunch was hosted at the Pacific Aviation Museum on Ford Island.  Anne Murata and the great staff made us feel welcome and gave us a great tour of the control tower.  We were then given a guided tour of the rest of the main museum hanger with TONS of interesting stories.

Mr. Sandman

We created this short film over a few days to show the power of an industrial sandblasting rig.  Bob Freeman tells me that he's had this concept in his head for years and was happy to finally exectute on it.  He provided an outline of the concept and I developed the shot list and did my best to direct the shoot.  Please enjoy our short video, and remember, please don't try this at home!

Sea Based X-Band Radar Tour

Occasionally moored in Pearl Harbor, the Sea Based X-Band Radar is easily visible from the H-1 and has quickly become a 'landmark' of sorts for local residents.  Thanks to Burt Lum and his amazing contacts at the Pacific Command, we were granted a tour of this enormous platform.  Originally built by a Norwegian company, the basic semi-submersible rig was modified by Boeing in Texas for duty with the US Ballistic Missile Defence System.  This is where the giant Phased Array Radar was mated to the platform in 2006.

DV Embark to the USS John C. Stennis

DV in Navyspeak means "Distinguished Visitor" and frankly, I don't think I'm anyone that needs such a moniker.  However, it's what they call civilians who have the opportunity to visit an aircraft carrier at sea and since, for 24 hours, I was on the USS Stennis, I guess that's me.

A Deep Dive Into the CR-Z

Many people have been asking us about our new Honda CR-Z.  In light of the recent spike in fuel costs, and the events in Japan, I feel we were fortunate to purchase our car when we did.  What follows are my thoughts on the mechanicals of the car and a driving perspective.

Life with the CR-Z: Two Months In

It's been about two months since we got our Honda CR-Z and I thought I would give you an update on how things are going.  Since we took delivery of the car on January 28 we've refueled the car five times with a lifetime fuel economy average of 39.9 MPG.

Our new baby! 2011 Honda CR-Z

Impressions after my first drive as an owner. Overall, the feeling is one of connectedness and directness in all the inputs except for the throttle. I drove mostly in ‘normal’ during the drive and the only thing I noticed is that the gas pedal had a slightly disconnected feel. I understand that the DBW computer is dampening minor throttle corrections, the TSX does this too. With the CR-Z it’s just more pronounced.

A Cobra in Paradise

This video project began as a 'dry run' for a longer video production to come.  However, as we began working on it, the scope of the project grew and grew.
