2014 MDX Due Soon
The all-new 2014 Acura MDX is set to go on sale on June 20th. It's a few weeks late or several weeks early, depending on your point of view. Originally slated for a June 2nd release, it was pushed back as far as July 30th before moving to the current June 20th date.
What we're going to get is an all new SUV built on a purpose built chassis. The new chassis and body uses 55% lightweight materials like high strength steel, aluminum, and magnesium. Despite a slight increase in overall length, the new MDX is 275 pounds lighter than the outgoing model.
Also new is the aluminum alloy Earth Dreams 3.5 liter VTEC V-6 engine. Like the engine in the flagship RLX, this boasts Direct Injection and Cylinder Deactivation for improved power and better fuel economy. Rated for 290 horsepower, the MDX is rated for 18 MPG city and 27 highway. If you select the new Front Wheel Drive version, the economy jumps to 20 MPG city and 28 highway. For the first time, the MDX will be offered with two drivetrains. The Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) from the 2nd generation MDX continues, but there is now a FWD version for warm climates where SH-AWD may not be as high a priority.
Inside, numerous improvements should create a better experience for all occupants. Noticeable improvements include one touch access to the 3rd row, now available from either side. A new sliding 2nd row seat that allows for more leg room (if needed) for the 3rd row. There is more cargo space behind the 3rd row, or more space overall with it stowed.
For the driver and front seat occupant, there is an enlarged center console, designed to store a small laptop or iPad(s) out of sight. You'll also find other new features like Keyless Entry, Pushbutton Start, and a new Touchstreen display to reduce the number of dashboard buttons from 45 to 9.
As you move through the MDX trim levels, you'll find more available technology than ever. Technology Package models will offer traffic data independant from XM so owners here in Honolulu can benefit from flow rates and re-routing. Lane Keeping Assist (LKAS), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low Speed Follow. Blind Spot Information (BSI), and Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) are available in the Advance Package.
