The 2007 RD-X Concept Debuts in Detroit
Next summer, Acura will introduce an all new Compact Sport Utility called the 2007 RDX. The concept shown here will give you a good idea what the finished product will look like. I’d estimate this prototype is 90% accurate.
Acura designers pictured an urban professional with an active lifestyle that wants a sports car, but also needs the practical aspects of a utility vehicle. At 181.5 inches long, it blends the nimble, fun to drive nature of the TSX with the utility of the larger MDX. It will comfortably seat 5 adults and all their gear for a weekend getaway.
The emphasis here is on Sport and the RDX will have no less than 200 hp although the exact engine configuration is still under wraps. It will also feature our Super Handling All-Wheel Drive that debuted on the flagship 2005 RL sedan. This revolutionary system distributes power between the front and rear wheels, AND also between the left and right rear wheels to dramatically improve dry and wet weather handling. This can actually help pivot the nose of the car into the corner to maintain the proper "line" into the turn.
Since this was designed as an "urban fighter", outward visibility in city traffic was of utmost importance and extra attention was placed on sightlines to minimize blind spots. The Advanced Compatibility Engineering chassis (again introduced on the RL) enhances occupant protection and reduces damage to other cars and even pedestrians in accidents.
I’ll have more information early next year so watch for another newsletter after the car is out.
